Dreaming up my next creation…
For those who may not know me, my name is Katie, the artist behind KtC Designs. I am a lifelong scribbler, sketcher and painter who decided a little over one year ago to learn digital art as a means of delving into the world of surface pattern design. For the longest time, having little kiddos in the house has admittedly held me back from creating as much art as I used to. The mess of cleaning up paints and keeping little fingers out combined with just a general lack of time were excuses I gave for not creating.
But I need it. Art is a part of my core that helps me express myself - I'm sure many fellow artists could agree! So a little exploration and research led me to playing around with digital drawing software. And then I thought, could I actually create a small business from my art? Can I share what I create with the world? Surface pattern design - the art behind every flat surface we can print on - became the perfect fit for me.
The Spark of Inspiration
The subject for my first pattern came instinctually. Naturally, I combined my love of art with another love - peacocks! I cannot tell you exactly when they became my favorite bird but something about them has captivated me since childhood. The city park where I grew up had peacock enclosures that I always wanted to just stop and watch them strut around whenever we were there. There's something mesmerizing about the way they move, that confident swagger paired with an almost otherworldly beauty.
Then one day I came across an image of two male peacocks captured midflight in a majestic battle. Feathers flared out, talons bared - pure elegance in a show of strength. That image stopped me in my tracks. Here were these creatures known for their grace and beauty, yet displaying such raw power and fierceness. It was that duality, that perfect balance of elegance and strength, that sparked the entire collection. I knew immediately that this was what I wanted my first pattern collection to capture.
From Concept to Collection
Now, full disclosure, my skills on the computer have improved and adapted as time has passed. Like all things, we get better the more we practice. So, looking back on my first patterns now and especially the layouts of my files (why didn't I label anything?!), I almost cringe. Is it still a beautiful design that I would put in my own home? Yes, most definitely. I actually have this one waiting in fabric to be made into a pillow for either my couch or bed, I haven't decided which! But that being said, with everything I've learned, I may one day do a revised iteration of this pattern in what has evolved into my own style.
What started as a single pattern idea quickly grew into something bigger. The "Elegance in Strength" collection became my playground for exploring different ways to celebrate the peacock motif. I wanted to create a cohesive mini collection that could work together in a space—patterns that spoke to each other while each having their own personality.
Exploring the Collection
The hero pattern, "Strength in Elegance - Tropical Greenery Peacock Flight on Burgundy," showcases peacocks in full flight surrounded by lush tropical foliage. The deep burgundy background creates drama and depth, letting the greens, blues, and those surprising burnt umber tones in the peacock's wings really pop. This one was all about capturing that moment of powerful grace.
But I didn't stop there. The collection needed variety—patterns that could complement the main design while standing beautifully on their own:
The Geometric Diagonal: Taking inspiration from the peacock's natural form, I created a pattern featuring the birds arranged in a geometric diagonal layout against a peachy-cream background with burnt orange diagonal lines. This bridges the gap between organic and structured, bringing a modern edge to the traditional motif.
The Classic Gingham: Every collection needs a grounding element, and this green and cream buffalo check does exactly that. It's the perfect neutral that ties back to the natural greens in the peacock patterns while giving your eye a place to rest.
The Bold Feather Statement: Two dramatic peacock feather patterns—one on golden yellow, one on mint green—showcase the iconic eye of the feather in all its glory. These are for the bold, for those moments when you want to make an unapologetic statement.
The Botanical Flight on Mint: A lighter, airier version of the flight pattern set against a soft mint background with delicate botanical elements. This one breathes a bit more, perfect for spaces that need that peacock magic without quite as much intensity.
The Colors That Tell the Story
This collection I leaned somewhat heavily into a bohemian style and color palette with botanical elements. However, I also blended in geometrics and a classic gingham. Until I started closely examining these photographs of peacocks in flight, I honestly never realized how much of a burnt umber or orange tone they have in their wings. While peacocks are not the best fliers nor do they often fly far, their wings and feathers are impressive. The way their long tail feathers will curl up into a sweeping flourish like a paint stroke itself stirred me.
Every color used in these patterns was inspired by that found naturally in the peacock itself. The deep burgundy echoes the shadows in their plumage. The vibrant blues mirror those iridescent feathers that catch the light. The greens—from deep jungle to soft mint—reflect both the tropical habitat and the subtle tones in their neck feathers. And those unexpected warm tones? Pure peacock wing magic.
A Collection That Grows with You
What I love most about this collection is its versatility. You can go full bohemian maximalist with the tropical flight pattern as your statement piece, layering in the watercolor feathers and gingham for depth. Or you can keep it minimal and modern with just the geometric diagonal and a pop of the bold feather pattern. The patterns work together, but they don't demand to be used together—and that feels important for a first collection.
Looking at these patterns now, more than a year into my surface pattern design journey, I see both my starting point and my potential. They represent that moment when passion met possibility, when I decided to stop making excuses and start creating again. Yes, I've grown as an artist since then. Yes, my technical skills have improved. But the heart of this collection—that love of peacocks, that fascination with their duality, that desire to bring nature's beauty into our homes—remains exactly the same.
What's Next
The Elegance in Strength collection is available currently on my Spoonflower shop, printed on demand on everything from wallpaper to fabric to home decor. Whether you're ready to transform a room with peacock-adorned curtains or just want to add a few coordinating throw pillows, this collection has something for every comfort level with bold pattern.
And for those wondering—yes, I'm already dreaming up what's next. Because once you start creating again, it's hard to stop. And honestly? I don't want to.
